'The Voice': Two singers axed by Christina Aguilera, Blake Shelton

There was a twist on NBC's "The Voice" on Monday: two singers on each team were sent home by their coaches, Blake Shelton and Christina Aguilera, in the show's first-ever instant elimination.

America's voting results will be revealed today (9ET/PT), when the bottom vote-getters have last-chance performances to be granted immunity from their coaches.

Team Blake

Farmgirl RaeLynn emphasized her country roots with cowboy boots and an energetic performance of "She's Country" by Jason Aldean. Christina was impressed with the performance. CeeLo said it was RaeLynn's best showing yet, and it "sounded like AC/DC did a country song." Adam agreed the song was RaeLynn's best, and Blake said it was "the most proud moment I've had this whole season."

Rocker Jordis Unga sang a soulful "A Little Bit Stronger" by Sara Evans. Christina said, "I like when you show your vulnerable side." CeeLo called the performance "touching" and Adam said it was "amazing." Blake said Jordis was "perfect."

Waitress Erin Willett belted Adele's "Set Fire to the Rain" in front of sparklers, which scared Adam. "I got very Jewish with the fire," he said, adding, "the phrasing was a little bit off." CeeLo said Erin did the song justice, and Christina said, "You sang your heart out." Blake called the performance "amazing."

Former Alicia Keys backup singer Jermaine Paul crooned "Against All Odds" by Phil Collins. Christina told him he was her favorite from Blake's team and a "phenomenal singer." CeeLo called Jermaine "one of the strong contenders," and Adam said he had "great tone." Blake said the performance represented Jermaine's "superstar" turning point.

Team Christina

Single father Jesse Campbell sang Beyonc's "Halo" to his daughter. His emotional performance and signature ad-libs won over the judges. "Wonderful," said CeeLo. Adam said Jesse's ability is "crazy" and he's a "huge favorite." Blake called it "great" and Christina said, "On an emotio! nal leve l you really brought it."

Birthday girl Ashley De La Rosa, who turned 18, showed her vulnerable side with "Foolish Games" by Jewel. CeeLo said it was "great." Adam said Ashley was "the biggest surprise" of the season, and Blake said, "The smartest decision on Season 2 was Christina's saving you" last week. Christina told Ashley she "nailed it" and is growing each week.

Coffee shop singer Lindsey Pavao put an indie-rock twist on Katy Perry's "Part of Me." CeeLo, who was (surprisingly) unfamiliar with the tune, enjoyed it and liked the staging. Adam said Lindsay was great, but was pitchy on powerful notes. Blake said he's a fan, but agreed Lindsay was pitchy. Christina said she sees Lindsey grow every week.

Classically trained Chris Mann opted for Coldplay instead of his usual opera with "Viva La Vida." Adam admitted he wanted Chris to sing opera. Christina said she was proud of Chris for stepping out of his comfort zone.

And some coaches took the stage:

Christina, her team, a group of dancers and the Crenshaw High School choir performed Christina's hit "Fighter" with plenty of smoke, lights and leather.

Adam, with his band Maroon 5 and Wiz Khalifa, premiered the song "Payphone."

Blake and his team, in a laid-back performance, sang "Heartache" by The Eagles.

Finally, coaches Christina and Blake had to each eliminate one of their own. Christina sent home soulful fan-favorite Jesse. "I'm grateful for this opportunity," he said. Blake sent home rocker Jordis, who was in the bottom last week. "I'm sad, but I understand," she said.
