Christina Aguilera Joins the I Love My Curves Campaign: Our Celebrity Weight Obsession

Christina Aguilera

"I love my curves." This appears to be the mantra for those celebrities who have come under fire for being more than a size zero. Now pop sensation Christina Aguilera has joined the ranks of these famous women, as she attempts to thwart negativity over her obvious weight gain. But the "Dirrrty" singer (along with several others) is having problems getting the world to distinguish between 'fat' and 'curves'---even though she's nowhere near what most would call obese. Are we getting worse with our criticism of celebrity body images? Or has Xtina's altered appearance been legitimately targeted? Here are some theories as to why we're obsessed with the star's morphing figure.

She criticized Kelly Osbourne.

It's no secret that Kelly Osbourne and Christina Aguilera are not the best of pals. On a few occasions Kelly has mentioned how Christina teased her for being fat. But now that the British reality star has become a petite fashion icon in Hollywood, she is having her say. Although it's not all about Kelly per se, you can't help but be reminded that sometimes when you're not nice to someone else, karma has a way of coming back to bite you in the butt.

The weight gain seems fairly sudden.

Let's face it. This makes her an easy target. Someone like Sinead O'Connor, who has been in the industry for many years, also receives attention for having gained extra weight. But with her, we almost expect it; after all, twenty years can do a lot to a person's body. But Christina hasn't had that much time. Furthermore, we've done our fair share of speculating. Maybe she's pregnant. Maybe she's depressed. Maybe she just doesn't feel like working out. The reasons for adding a few extra inches are basically endless.

She's ordinarily pretty tiny.

Here's another thing to think about. Christina is ordinarily a pretty tiny girl. Reportedly, she's only gained about 15 pounds or so. But on a small frame even a few extra pounds can look like a lot of weight, especially when people are used to seeing you in such slinky costumes. To call Christina fat would probably be pretty unreasonable. But it's hard not to notice an extra bulge or two when you continue to wear such tight (and over the top) outfits.

And speaking of those outfits

The "Beautiful" singer is also coming under attack because of her colorful wardrobe. Frankly, those sexy outfits look less sexy when they're stretched awkwardly over an expanding figure. Most notably are two of Christina's public appearances: her panty-clad Michael Jackson tribute and her more recent bandage-dress AMA performance. When a celeb wears anything perceived to be ill-fitting (no matter what size she is), there is usually a backlash. Case in point? Her casual pumpkin-picking outing with her son for Halloween went basically unnoticed. Hmmm
