People's Choice 2013: Katy Perry and One Direction Feel the Love

Katy Perry scored five trophies at last year's People's Choice Awards, and she wasn't even there. The pop starlet made it out to this year's event, held Wednesday at the Nokia Theatre L.A. Live in Los Angeles, and only won four. Go figure.

Billboard's Woman of the Year repeated wins for Favorite Female Artist and Music Video (this time for "Part of Me") but she also took home Favorite Pop Artist and Favorite Fan Following, for her KatyCats.

"If I had to pick one of the awards I'd have to pick that one," she said. "I look forward to entertaining you again. So, back to the studio I go."

Meanwhile, Taylor Swift kicked off what is bound to be a busy awards show season by besting Jason Aldean, Carrie Underwood and Blake Shelton to snag Favorite Country Artist. In a show of incredible honesty, Swift astutely exclaimed "This keeps happening to me!" on stage. Yes Taylor, it! does!

Moments later, Maroon 5's Adam Levine gently mocked the country starlet's self-awareness when accepting the band's nod for Favorite Band. "Damn you Swift!" he gobbed. The "Payphone" pop-rock band took home the same award last year.

Dressed in white and surrounded by candles, Levine's fellow "Voice" judge Christina Aguilera later belted her emotional ballad "Blank Page" before receiving a just-for-her trophy dubbed the People's Voice Award. Her lengthy acceptance speech contained messages both powerful ("Kids who are being bullied or feel lost, remember you have a voice") and confusing ("I hope my voice helps others find a home as well").

The Wanted provided one of the more whimsical and downright entertaining moments of the evening when they punctuated their acceptance speech for Favorite Breakout Artist with an a cappella version of "Afternoon Delight." "We promised we'd sing a song for Ellen if we won," Max George said, referencing Ellen DeGeneres.

Fellow boy band One Direction swiped up Favorite Album for "Up All Night" and Favorite Song honors for "What Makes You Beautiful"; low key singer-songwriter Jason Mraz won Favorite Male Artist; Rihanna won Favorite R&B Artist, and Nicki Minaj was chosen as Favorite Hip-Hop Artist.

There were also live performances courtesy of Jason Aldean, who hammered home "My Kind of Party," as well as R&B powerhouse Alicia Keys, who stripped down "Girl on Fire" before busting out on "New Day" as her husband Swizz Beatz and son Egypt cheered on from the sidelines.

On the TV side, "Glee" enjoyed back-to-back wins when onscreen roommates Lea Michele and Chris Colfer scored Favorite Comedic TV Actress and Actor awards. "It's amazing to be the subject of your fandom!" Colfer told all the Gleeks out there that have kept the FOX series alive, despite lower ratings
